Some secrets are worth killing for.

Paul Jorgensen came back from the war with a talent for fixing the unfixable.  At the Eastern and Oriental, George Town's grandest hotel, he buries the scandals, clears out the swindlers and the scoundrels and prefers not to be asked too many questions about his methods.

Then a guest is blackmailed, a letter writer is found dead in the old town, and the police look away.  Something in Jorgensen will not.

The hunt drags him down into the dark underbelly of Penang: the haze of the opium dens, the lure of the brothels, the merchant houses where fortunes are built on buried men.  Every door he opens costs someone their secret, and on this island, secrets are kept in blood.
